Can I tether to iPhone via USB?

Hey, quick one. I usually just use Wi-Fi hotspot from my iPhone, but wondering if I can tether with a USB cable instead?

Figured it might be more stable and save battery since it’s charging at the same time. Anyone tried it? Easy to set up?

Yeah will stick to wifi tether

I do wish this was an option since USB Tethering tends to be better for connection. Plus now that iPhones have USB C you should be able to easily get over gig speeds as long as your carrier can provide that.

Yes it’s definitely possible to do so!

PiFi is based on OpenWrt so it should be trivial to achieve - I will give it a quick test with my iPhone tomorrow and follow-up if any steps are needed to get it working!

Thank you! Appreciate you looking into it.

Hi,

I tried it, but it was messing with the wireless network config. It did work, but it broke the setup and needed extra packages installed via the terminal. I am going to add it properly as a feature in the next firmware build so it is simple to use and does not break anything.

In the meantime, I would suggest wireless tethering (if you have the PiFi Kit and can pair wirelessly). Wired tethering will be available in the next major firmware, likely in early April.
