I have some issues when trying to go through the setup process in the app. Seems like they are new issues since a search here does not give me any hints.
The first issue is that the app will always give me the Port issue and ask me to switch to WAN mode. But PiFi is already online. Even without going through the setup process, I can open the browser and certainly have access to the internet.
I really stripped everything down to the bare minimum after a couple of failed attempts. No secondary (third-party) Wifi dongle. No AdGuard. I even tried just ignoring (skipping everything). But then I will get to the “updating timezones” screen, and it will just load forever, never completing.
It seem as though there is an issue with the app communicating with the Pi (that’s likely why it is saying the port issue and getting stuck on Timezone). One quick thing I’m thinking is if your device has any software-based VPN apps turned on (something like NordVPN or even iCloud Private Relay as this could prevent communication with devices on the network)
Not sure if you’ve tried already but I’d suggest re-installing the PiFi app or double checking on another device
Can you let me know if it’s iOS or Android and which version (Pi4 or Pi5)?
But I managed to fix it! Your suspicion/hint about the app’s communcation being interrupted, possibly by a VPN gave, me an idea. I did not have a VPN running. But I do use something non-standard, namely GrapheneOS. So, I tried it again through my work phone running plain-Android . It completed the setup process in a fraction of a second!
Very nice! thank you! This already gives me a huge confidence boost in purchasing the kit once it becomes available in the EU. If I manage to get the third-party USB wifi dongle working before then to confirm the PoC, even better!
