Running PiFi on my new RPi5, 16gb

Will the PiFi run properly on the new 16gb version of the Pi5? If so, how will the PiFi make use of the increased RAM?

I don’t (yet) have a Pi 5 (16Gb) to hand but with Pi 5 (2Gb) it required some modifications to run. That being said PiFi will 100% support all models of Pi 5 - but maybe not be on day 1 of release.

The current beta firmware I’m working on (based on OpenWrt 24.10) will support all Pi 5 editions including 16Gb model when it gets an official release - which will be shortly after OpenWrt release it as a stable build (it’s current release canditate 5 so that will be pretty soon)

As for making use of increased RAM - it’ll have at least some improvements in performance with AdGuard Home and VPN performance (particularly with OpenVPN, lesser so with WireGuard which is less reliant on RAM)

I’m pretty excited though about the possibilities of higher RAM models - and I would be keen to see applications/extensions for Home Assistant, local AI models etc too that can take full advantage of the improvements in hardware. So I think in future we can see powerful capabilities that tap into the higher RAM.

Thanks for info Paul! They released the 16GB Pi5 yesterday in the U.S… I was lucky to pick one up before m local MicroCenter ran out… I have already added the Pimoroni Base Duo, and plan to use PiFi from SD, and Desktop from NVMe if you suspect that will work. I look forward to using that extra RAM in future versions of PiFi. Thanks for the response. Still a big fan of the PiFi!
