Virtual Reality

If this can be put into access point mode &or directly connected to a PC (over USB would be extra cool) to provide low latency connection between PC and VR headset - these would sell like hotcakes to the vr community.

Kind regards,

Roy

The PiFi USB provides much faster wireless (if pairing wirelessly to VR) and is certainly much much faster vs internal wireless on the Pi 4 (especially for gaming and if using with VPN)

I think one key thing is that there should be wired internet into the Pi (so, by default, the Pi ethernet port is WAN meaning you can connect it via ethernet cable to your router or a powerline adapter if in a different room for best speeds)

Now for the wired connection directly to the headset, you’d need two adapters:

  • One USB 3.0 (Type A) to ethernet (this goes into the blue USB port on Raspberry Pi) - something like this
  • One USB C-to-ethernet for the end that goes into the VR (pictured) - like this

Double check your Quest/VR headset supports USB ethernet (from looking at Reddit seems at least a few of the Quest devices do).

So for the unfamiliar, wireless PCVR involves rendering the game on PC and then transmitting it to the Meta Quest (or equivalent) headset.

Latency and consistency are key, especially as users strive to push higher and higher bitrates to their headsets (think the enthusiasts are pushing 500-800mbps) to their headsets at ~10ms latency using wifi6e (and soon wifi7). Most people push 100-500mbps at >10ms on wifi5.

200mbps results in a great experience – the overwhelming majority would be happy with, at least for the next few years…

Meta has a special dongle but its not without its issues. https://www.meta.com/gb/quest/accessories/d-link-vr-air-bridge/

The vr community is crying out for a device they can plug into their PC’s so they can get a great link to their PC with or without forwarding internet to the headset – wherever they may be. There are good routers out there, but they’re awfully expensive.

Bonus points if the router can run of a mobile’s 4/5g to provide remote connection aswell.

Sounds like the PIFi can do all this - if given an extra ethernet port via USB3.0 at least. Bear in mind some games require the user to move the headset around rapidly - sometimes obscuring l-o-s between the headset and the antenna.

Kind Regards,
